In today’s fast-paced world,  psychological disorders are a major concern for our society. This does not affect people mentally but also physically. It starts from stress and anxiety resulting in bipolar disorders or schizophrenia  Are psychological disorders a warning? YES, these are a silent warning to our mental health and physical health also. Psychological disorders are independent of age, color, gender, and race. It is a psychiatric condition that may be due to genetic, behavioral, or environmental changes.

Major Types of Psychological Disorders

There are many types of psychological disorders depending on their symptoms and way of treatment.

  1. Anxiety
    Anxiety is an emotion or feeling of worry. It can be due to anticipation of a future or stress. Panic attacks are also a result of anxiety. It has most of the prominent effects on the digestive and cardiac systems.
    Some examples are

    • Social Anxiety Disorder: Fear of judgment by others and social situations.
    • Panic Disorder: sudden periods of intense fear and terror that can last for minutes or longer.
  2. Mood Disorders
    Mood disorders are a mixed condition having both behavioral and mental disorders having primary effects on emotions . It includes 

    • Depression: Continuous feelings of sadness and loss of interest
    • Bipolar Disorder: uncontrolled emotions leading to extreme mood swings including episodes of mania
  3. Psychotic Disorders
    Psychotic disorders are hallucinations having nothing in reality and delusions that result in difficulties determining what is real and what is not real.
  4. Personality Disorders
    Personality disorders are mental health conditions characterized by  patterns of behavior, thinking, and perception that deviate significantly from societal norms, causing distress or difficulty in relationships
  5. Trauma Disorders
    Trauma Disorders are due to some incidents faced by a person in his life that are unexpected leading to severe anxiety and flashbacks following exposure to that incident

Causes of Psychological Disorders

Psychological disorders are complex and may be due to various factors like biological, environmental, and social.  Common factor are

Genetic : A particular mental disease that is in the family for several generations
Stress: abuse, childhood trauma, and depression.
Brain Development: abnormality in the brain resulting in small brain size  and imbalance of neurotransmitters
Social and cultural factors: social isolation, cultural stigma, and poverty can cause depression and stress

Diagnosis and treatment

Psychological disorders are evaluated by mental health professionals for diagnosis by interviewing clinically , psychologically testing and sometimes by physical examination.
The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) is used for the diagnosis of mental health based on symptoms.

Different treatments are used to treat physiological conditions like

Psychotherapy: This therapy is used to understand a patient’s thoughts and resolve issues through conversation.
Medication: Antidepressants, anti-anxiety drugs, and antipsychotics are prescribed to manage anxiety and mood-dependent disorders.
Change in Lifestyle: A balanced diet , proper exercising, and yoga can help to manage stress.
Support: Family therapy and support can improve emotional disorders

Conclusion

Psychological disorders are complex and varied, affecting physically and mentally. Their risk can be reduced by understanding causes and symptoms, and available treatments can lead to a better life. Family support plays the most important role in managing psychological disorders.
